Quick Start Guide for Digital Writing

Here at the FIU Digital Writing Studio, we always encourage you to dive deep into the rich culture, history, and theory of digital composition – we support your efforts to engage in a robust learning experience and to understand everything that the writing technologies of the 21st century can offer.

However…

Sometimes you’ve just got to get that project started – so we’ve put together four “Quick Start” guides to get you up and running on your first digital writing projects. To get started, just click one of the four options below, whether that’s blogging, vlogging, podcasting, or presenting, we can get you up and running with a first draft in no time!

  • IMPORTANTAll of these quick-start tutorials have a basic assumption: that you know what you want to write about before you get started. If you’re having trouble coming up with a topic, finding sources for research, or just generally getting your thoughts out prior to starting your digital writing project, talk to your professor and / or make an appointment!

Blogging

Web + log = Blog! Blogs are relatively simple compared to other digital writing options and emphasize good written composition skills while still encouraging user-friendly formatting and multimedia elements to enhance your writing.

Video Essay

Whether on YouTube, TikTok, or some other platform, the basics of making an interesting video all require good content and punchy editing.

Podcasting

Existing somewhere between a blog and a radio broadcast, a podcast (iPod + Broadcast) is an exciting audio-only format that allows you to create rich soundscapes that enhance your spoken delivery.

Presenting

Probably the most multimodal of all digital writing projects, the basics of creating a good slide deck to accompany your in-person, Zoom, or video presentation is a valuable skill in the workplace.
