Visiting the DWS

The Digital Writing Studio is located in DM482C on MMC Campus. We hold regular walk-in hours for students and faculty who want to work with us. We can also schedule appointments for consultations, collaborative work, workshops, and class visits and provide equipment and software students can use for their writing classes.

To make an appointment, email cgregory@fiu.edu or fill out the form on the right side of the page.

What can students expect when they visit the DWS?

Digital writing is a hands-on process, and we provide design guidance, technology support, rhetorical advice, and more. Students can arrange for consultations in our studio space (or remotely through Zoom) where we work with students and small groups to:

  • brainstorm project ideas
  • Explore the best media options for their purpose and audience
  • provide feedback on the content and design of a digital project
  • help students to learn how to use various programs to meet their goals as writers
  • Instruction on how to use resources such as equipment and software

Some student misconceptions about DWS consulting are that we simply help with the tech, or that we are basically a writing center for digital stuff. We can help at all stages of the writing process, but we can provide the most helpful support early in the writing process, to help think productively and rhetorically about your digital compositions.

Consultations

Consultations are especially valuable early in the composing process, since digital writing requires a lot of planning, but we are glad to work with students at any stage of their design process. During a consultation, you will work with DWS staff who has expertise as a media composer and writer. Through collaborative conversations, you’ll receive supportive feedback to help approach your digital writing project creatively and productively.

Walk-ins, self-guided visits, and collaborations

Students can visit the DWS without an appointment for a space to work on their digital writing projects. Feel free to visit whenever we are open, to work for as long as you need. As long as you’re actively working on a project, you can work in the DWS independently or with your classmates to record, edit, design, brainstorm with as much guidance from the DWS staff as you want.
